One type of pillow filling can give you neck pain and some other filling causes no problem at all. Here, you can have ideas of different types of pillow fillings.
Down Filling

Down is the fluffy undercoating of a feather. The bottom of a bird’s feather is very soft. Its ability to hold its loft up is 3 times of the ability of synthetic alternatives. The price is low and it also adds a decent volume to the pillow.
Advantages
- Down pillow filling is light and soft.
- Pillow with down filling holds its shape for long and hence provides better support to head and neck.
- It is very durable.
Disadvantages
- Down pillow filling absorbs and retains heat from your body. This makes the pillow feel warm.
- The pillow flattens out if you don’t refluff it consistently.
- Some individuals find it too soft. The pillow provides inconsistent support to the head.
Polyester Fiberfill Filling

This is inexpensive and very popular filling. Polyester fiberfill filling is less breathable. This filling is not good during summer.
Advantages
- It is inexpensive.
- This filling is easy to clean.
- It is lightweight.
Disadvantages
- It requires frequent readjustments.
- The issue of clumping shortens its life span.
- Benzene, formaldehyde and toluene are some of the toxic chemicals used in the production of this filling. Therefore, it is not good for the health and environment.

Feather Filling

You can call it an inexpensive version of down filling. If you can fork out a little extra then go for down pillow filling.
Advantages
- This filling is cheaper than down pillow filling.
- It very is light and cuddly as well.
- It is malleable/moldable
Disadvantage
- Lingering and unpleasant odor is a common problem with this filling.
- The pillow requires consistent fluffing.
- It is difficult to clean.
- It’s ability to absorb and retain body heat makes the pillow feel warm.
Buckwheat Hull Filling

Buckwheat hulls are old-fashioned and all-natural filling. Individuals using buckwheat pillows often say that no other filling can beat buckwheat hulls filling.

Microbead Pillow Filling

Also known as “uniform polymer particles”, this is actually a synthetic alternative to buckwheat hulls. Both share a lot of characteristics.
Advantages
- It is breathable.
- It is moldable/malleable and does not lose its shape.
Disadvantages
- It gives chemical odor. “off-gassing” is also dangerous.
- You do not have too many options of loft or firmness.
Kapok Filling

This filling comes from Kapok tree. The soft fiber of this tree is also known as silk cotton. It is a good alternative to polyester and down pillow filling.
Advantages
- It is a non-toxic material.
- It is eco-friendly.
- It has soft texture.
Disadvantages
- This filling is extremely flammable.
- It is likely to develop lumps.
- It is not moldable. It can’t hold its shape.
