How to Heat a Garage

During the winter, we tend to spend a lot less time in our garages because well simply put; it’s freezing in there! But if you’re someone who uses your garage as a workshop during the warmer months, then putting aside those projects until the return of spring can be very frustrating. Cold winter weather does not have to keep you from your garage workshop if you invest in a heater for your garage. So, why not avoid this problem altogether by installing heating in your garage?

It might sound hard, but it’s quite easy as long as you follow these steps.

best-garage-for-home

1. Install Insulation

Regardless of how you may be tempted to save money and cut corners by skipping this step, DON’T. If your garage in uninsulated, then any heat generated from the installed system it will escape and the whole project will have been a waste.

2. Decide on a Forced Air Heater, or an Infrared Tube Heater

The former is cheaper and easier to install, but its airflow is going to stir up a lot of dust and debris which isn’t ideal if you plan to be doing a lot of painting or detail work in your garage. The latter won’t have this problem, but it is more expensive and more particular when it comes to installation.

3. Plan Your Installation

Before you even think about installing your heater, make sure you have a natural gas line, an electrical hook-up, and proper ventilation. You’ll also want to ensure you know exactly where you’re going to put the system. This isn’t much of an issue for forced-air heaters which can more or less be placed anywhere so long as there open space an accessible electrical outlet. Infrared heaters, on the other hand, should typically be around seven feet of the ground, and three feet away from any contents in your garage. The best spot is on the back wall of your garage, facing slightly downward at a 45-degree angle.

4. Install it

Now that you’ve done all of the prep work, you’re ready to install. Every product will come with a detailed set of installation instructions which will vary from the heater to heater so that we won’t get too far into that. And of course, if you’re not feeling confident enough in your electrical wiring or ductwork skills, then there is an option of hiring a professional. Yes, it is an extra expense, but for the sake of your safety and a high-quality installation, it can be worth it.

5. Enjoy your Heated Garage

Once you’ve experienced the comfort and bliss of a heated garage, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to fathom how you ever lived without one!

Apart from this installation, there are other ways you can heat your garage currently there are the variety of heaters, and among them propane radiant heater is widespread. A radiant garage heater is a heat source which is designed specifically to heat your garage and uses kerosene or propane to give it power.

In garages that work in vehicle maintenance, every hour the doors have to be opened. If working on repairing equipment, the doors might be opened only every day. Garages serving as storage can be opened even as less as monthly. Garages used for storage have different requirements than those that have to be working daily.

Maximizing Space in a Small Kitchen

maximizing-space-small-kitchen

Owners of small kitchens know all too well the challenges associated with trying to work in a cramped space. You may find yourself paging through websites, fantasizing about knocking out a wall and doubling your kitchen space. Certainly, that’s one way to go about it, but you can maximize your space, and save money by working within your kitchen’s existing footprint.

Here are some clever tricks to help make the most of a small kitchen.

Pull-out Counter Space

One of the biggest complaints in any tiny kitchen is a lack of counterspace. Counterspace is necessary for food preparation, workspace, and small appliances. A great way to increase the amount of counterspace you have without knocking down any walls, is to have a remodeling contractor install pull out counters.

This clever design installs a second counter just beneath your existing counter. This way, you can slide it out when you need extra space to work, and slide it back in when you need the space for walking.

Undershelf Racks

Storing an entire household’s cooking gear into only a few kitchen cabinets can be truly challenging. A great customization option is to install small racks on the undersides of your cabinet shelves. This gives you room to stack things up on the bottom shelf, and to sneak a few small items into the rack as well.

Backsplash Shelf

A sprawling kitchen may have the luxury of using a backsplash for nothing more than an artistic statement, but in a small kitchen, you have the option of putting that backsplash to work. Something as simple as installing a small shelf along the length of the backsplash can add a lot of much-needed storage space for utensils, small appliances, spices, or cookbooks.

Replace Shelves with Slide out Drawers

Static shelves in cabinets or pantries can cause a lot of problems in smaller kitchens. Every square inch of storage space is needed, and shelves tend to get easily overcrowded. This means items often get shoved way to the back and lost or forgotten.

slide-out-drawers

A great alternative is to replace static shelves with slide out shelving or drawers. This way, you can see everything that is in your cabinets or pantry, and you don’t have to worry about something getting lost in the way, way back.

Movable Island

A kitchen island is a great way to increase not only storage but also available counterspace. The problem is, where on earth are you going to put one in a small kitchen?

One great solution to this problem is the movable Island. You can roll it into the kitchen when you need the extra workspace, and you can roll it away when it is not in use.

Custom Cabinetry

Small kitchens have to make good use of every tiny bit of space. You may be amazed to discover that a tall narrow cabinet with slide-out storage can fit in the space between your refrigerator and the wall, or that extra shelving can be added up above your top cabinets.

You can speak with a kitchen remodeler about what they might suggest for you. With custom cabinetry, you can get extra storage to fit anywhere.

Smart Corner Cabinets

Many small kitchens have the dreaded corner cabinet. Cabinets situated on the corner can lead to lost items, and can be very clumsy to work with. You can install slide-out, half-moon shaped shelving, or rotating lazy susans to help keep all your gear front and center.

smart-corner-cabinets

Small kitchens don’t have to be big headaches. Really all it requires is a creative use of space, and a keen eye for organization opportunities. So, don’t go knocking down that wall just yet. See if you can work with what you have first.

The use of Pycnogenol in sports

Athletic performance always creates an oxidative stress on the body resulting in the rise of metabolic activity. This increased metabolism is the result of a 10 to 20 fold increase in the intake of oxygen. Professional athletes and bodybuilders make up for the increased oxidative stress through the production of anti-oxidative secretions in the form of enzymes, protecting the body cells against damaging free radicals. This process is actually performed by Pycnogenol to prevent the damage of bodily cells due to excessive workout routines. Research investigations have shown the effects of this supplement to increase endurance levels during recreational activities protecting the cells from harmful radicals and aiding in better performance.

1

Pycnogenol – The King of Anti-oxidants

Several research studies have been conducted over the years to establish the beneficial effects of anti-oxidants. Out of the available options that are used as an anti-aging supplement Pycnogenol turns out to be a trustworthy and effective compound in countering problems of premature skin aging. Extensive research work on this supplement has proved the powerful effects of this antioxidant to provide significant results on rejuvenating the skin when taken topically or even orally.  This super antioxidant is 50 times more effective than Vitamin E and 20 times more effective than Vitamin C in fighting free radicals and maintaining a healthy skin.

In addition to the anti-oxidation benefit of Pycnogenol its exhibition of anti-inflammatory properties aids in supporting microcirculation. The active anti-aging ingredients in such compound help to protect the skin from the harmful ultra-violet rays of the sun preventing premature aging of the skin through photo-aging. It counters the effects of chronic inflammation, sun damage, smog, damaging free radicals and pollution. This extract is extensively used in wrinkle and anti-aging creams to neutralize free radicals and prevent oxidation.

The right concentration of Pycnogenol in skin cream

Like other active anti-aging ingredients, the right concentration of this herbal extract is essential in combating anti-aging problems. This ingredient must be included in sufficient quantity in skin products in order to be effective for protection of the skin. Just claiming the presence of such ingredients in the skin care products by manufacturers won’t serve its purpose. Out of the various ant-aging products available in the market, very few of them contain the right amount of this compound because of it being quite expensive.

2

Although there is no pre-specified level of this compound to be included for topical applications, the recommended amount to be used in skin-care products and serums should range between 0.1% and 0.2% in order to be used as an anti-aging supplement. The easiest way to detect the appropriate content of this active- ingredient in the skin care product is by taking a look at the color. The color of the original extract being brown should provide a brownish appearance to the skin cream or serum that contains it. Any product that claims to contain this ingredient but does not provide a brown look has an insignificant presence of this compound. The ingredients label printed on the package should also have its name enlisted there.

Ways to improve your home for your pet? You have to know

Do you have pets at home? If so, you may have thought of improving your abode to give comfort to your pet. But before you go on deciding on what would be best to do with your house, it would be nice to know what’s causing the uncomfortable feelings that your pet may have. After doing so, you may want to consider the following.

How to improve your home

In order for you to make your pet really comfortable in your home, you should do the following:

Give them their space.

It is important for you to have an area in your house mean only for your pet. This going to be the place where you put its facilities like a pet water fountain, and if you have an automatic pet feeder, you can also put it in the same place. Their space is as important as a human needing a space for his own in a house.

A pet-friendly flooring.

You have to know that a flooring that is carpeted is much inclined to trap the unpleasant odor that you may be having. However, you can opt for alternatives such as hardwood, bamboo, and others because when they are maintained properly, it can give you an easier to clean surface, and that it doesn’t trap allergens as well as hide the fur that your pet may be unconsciously spreading.

The best paint should be picked.

Obviously, regardless of the cleanliness of a pet, it will still leave a mark on the walls. Therefore, it would be wise of you to pick a color that could more or less hide the marks that your pet may be having on your walls, and that of which would fit on the climate that you may be having. Remember that dark colors absorb the heat of the sun, which may cause discomfort to your pet.

Protect your pet from harmful substances.

Avoid carelessly placing poisonous things in areas that are easily accessible to your pet. If it is poisonous to you, how do you think it is for your pets? To get rid of circumstances wherein you have to bring your pet to a vet for examination, just keep harmful substances out of your pet’s reach.

What you can get from doing these

Facts about HIV/AIDS and Children

Aids

There has been a reduction in the number of new HIV infections among children below 15 years since 2002. However, there are still more than 700 children infected every year and millions affected by the disease due to the impact it has on the family. With more than 2.6 million children living with HIV to date, a lot of research has been dedicated to reduce transmission of the disease from pregnant mothers to their unborn child.

Most infections are mother to child transmissions

Most children living with HIV got it from their mothers while they were pregnant, breastfeeding or during childbirth. When children are born with HIV, 1/3 of them do not reach their first birthday if ARV treatment is not administered immediately after birth. Unfortunately, all new mother-to-child infections could be avoided but lack of resources, trained staff and funding especially in the developing nations is a challenge.

Cultural norms expose children to AIDS

In up to 52 countries around the world, girls below 15 are married off by their parents. This makes them sexually active at a young age and increases the risk of sexual transmission of this infection. Research shows that girls are at a higher risk of HIV infection when they practice sex from a young age. This is because they are likely to have unprotected sex or be coerced by older partners.

Over 20 million children are orphaned by HIV

One of the most heartbreaking impacts of the AIDS epidemic is the impact it has on children. There are communities that have lost generations because of the disease. By 2015, the United Nations reported that 15.1 million children in Sub-Saharan Africa have been orphaned by HIV. Countries like Zimbabwe and South Africa are the most affected. This explains why there have been many programs to support vulnerable children in Africa and their caregivers.

Access of ARVs can save children’s lives

The World Health Organization reported in 2013 that children below the age of 5 who are infected with HIV should receive antiretroviral treatment in order to reduce their likelihood of death. Getting ARV treatment immediately can reduce the likelihood of death by 75% if treatment is administered within the first 12 weeks after birth. The unfortunate thing is that ARV treatment is inaccessible in developing countries and 76% of children are not able to receive it. In some cases, the caregivers are forced to give children their adult drugs which risk them taking too much or too little of the medicine.

Know When It Is Time to Replace Windows

Replace Windows

Of the many things we do think about and often pertaining to our homes, our motor vehicles, our office etcetera, the thought of window replacement regrettably is not top of mind. Yet all of the spaces and places we frequent daily, like our offices and homes, have one thing in common. They have windows!  In fact, we only ever seem to think about the replacement of windows when it’s non-negotiable to have them replaced.

But have you ever wondered what the consequences are to not having windows replaced timeously? Well, here’s some things you may not know, however, once you do, it’s certain that necessary window inspection and ongoing condition assessment will be conjured.

High energy bills are the most obvious signs to getting your windows checked. With the infiltration of cold air in winter and warm air in summer, you will be compelled to turn up the heating and cooling systems in your home. This directly impacts your utility bills, which influences your household expenditure and also subtly impacts other critical elements like the environment. That’s the “silently” fundamental thing about windows. They are part of your space and “world” and they are seemingly grossly under-estimated for their important role.

You may, however, ask what are some of the other tell signs which one can immediately rely on without engaging the expertise of a window specialist that necessitates window replacements? Some obvious signs are when you sit close to your windows in winter and it’s cooler than the rest of your home. How about when you touch the windows glass in winter and it feels extremely cold to touch or the opposite in summer where it’s extremely hot to touch.  The other immediate tell sign is when frost builds up. The worrisome part of daily window frost build up is when it melts, turning into dripping water, the threat of wall and floor damage over a period of time is very likely.

The next best time to know when to replace a window is when frames start to show signs of rot. Without treatment available for the immediate stages of wood depreciation, it may be opportune to relook the repair with a total window replacement. This influences the aesthetic appeal of the home through optional newer designed window replacements, it resolves secondary consequences as outlined above and, it allows for eco- friendly installations that contribute towards your household’s environmental responsibility.

Window replacement also allows smaller businesses to evolve and thrive with small to medium projects. This may seem irrelevant but when considering what a big part of one’s day includes the existence of windows, the need for window specialists is directly proportionate to the number of windows we are faced with daily.

While windows and the need to know when to replace them, how to assess their condition and the impact they have on other areas seem irrelevant, it’s perhaps time to note that windows are indeed the “windows to the world,” and in saying this, it’s paramount to know when to have yours replaced.

Explore your unused garage!

harley-bar-with-harley-mybadpad

Most people tend to ignore their garage, or simply use it as an extra external storage space for their home. Have you ever wondered what your garage would look like if you transformed it into something useful? Your garage can be more than just a bland, cold and dark storage cupboard. Take a look at some of these funky ideas below and explore your unused garage.

Turn it into a gym

If you visit the gym regularly or are a fitness fanatic, why pay expensive membership fees when you can build your own gym and save money in the long run? Even if you don’t visit the gym, what better motivation than having your very own gym just outside your door. Your garage is usually quite a large space and if this is not currently being used for anything, what better way to use it than as a gym.

Turn it into a games room

GarageIf the temptation of a gym is something that doesn’t float your boat. Why not build a games room in your garage instead? A games room is a fantastic way to put your garage space to good use and will be the centre piece of your gatherings with family and friends. Installing a simple pool table, games console or ping pong table can instantly give this dull and boring room a lift in usefulness.

Obviously, if you are looking to use your garage for a games room I would advise decorating and installing some wall insulations/heating appliances. This will make it cosier, warmer and will also enhance its appearance when compared to previously.

Install a TV

If you are going down the games room route, why not also install a projector or large screen TV in your garage? This will give the appearance of a cinema and will also give you more activities within this previously dull and boring space. If you are looking to have friends and family over or if you are simply looking to unwind after a long week at work, a cinema is the perfect addition to relax with.

Think about security

If you are investing in your garage and want to make it more useful in your day to day activities, remember not to bypass how secure this space is. You wouldn’t want to invest hundreds of pounds of your hard earned money into your garage and then this all be taken away before you get a chance to put it to good use. Security is an important factor around every part of your home and your garage should not be an exception from this. Your garage door is generally the only entrance to your garage, so if this is becoming old and worn you may want to look into garage door repairs. If however, you need to replace this then there are a huge selection of garage doors on today’s market. This includes roller garage doors, up and over garage doors, automatic garage doors, wooden garage doors and many more. Finding the perfect one depends on how much space you need and the design you think would suit you best. If you are looking to maximize space and use your garage as a games room, I would recommend a roller garage door, sectional garage door or side hinged garage door (these open out so would save loads of space).

Your Final Checklist for Staging a Community Dance Recital

cropped-csdrecital2011-favs-109911-680x287

If you think practicing for a dance recital is nerve-wracking, then you should try planning one. Compared to just mastering your assigned parts through practice and perseverance, staging something as “light” as a community dance recital already entails much more.

Even if you’ve sought out the help of events professionals, you’ll still have a lot on your plate. Be prepared to do a lot of budgeting, problem-solving, public relations, logistics, and even some stress reduction techniques. Though much of the work happens months ahead of your scheduled date, the real drama often starts around one month prior. Here are just some of the most important things that you should keep in your final checklist:

  1. Confirm the Venue

At this stage of your preparations, you want to make absolutely sure that your venue is ready for your recital. Just a quick confirmation via email or phone call is enough.

Being one of the first things that get sorted out doesn’t prevent it from having any last-minute complications. You want to make absolutely sure that you’ll have a place to perform in, and it all starts with confirming your venue.

  1. Have the Participants Try their Costumes and Props Out

By this time, the event participants should have the costumes and props that have been ordered. Make sure that everyone has tried on items that they are going to wear. At this point, there will still be enough time for adjustments and alterations when needed.

You want to have everyone’s costumes and props finalized in advance. This doesn’t just guarantee that everyone looks the part, it’s also important to keep everyone suitably comfortable and safe.

  1. Check Your Decorations

Decorate the venue as early as possible. This can include installing backdrops or preparing your props. Always take your ingress time into account. For some theaters and concert halls, rentals may be continuous for different clients year-round. This means that they might not be able to give you more than a few days of preparation.

This should be considered well in advance of the final date. During these occasions, enlisting the help of a professional might provide the least trouble.  For instance, aside from letting you rent their ready-made stage backdrops, a backdrop rental provider can also assist with the installation of these very important stage elements.

  1. Work Out the Schedule with Your Photographer

Of course, everyone wants a record of their big day. It’s the culmination of months of hard work and preparation. So make sure to have someone concentrated solely on covering your event.

Aside from assuring that your photographer will make it in on the day itself, you want to schedule a shoot during one of your dress rehearsals. This will allow you to better promote your show later on.

  1. Print Out the Programs

With your photo shoots hopefully done by this point, you can also include pictures of dress rehearsals in your layout to help promote the show.

Once you have everything laid out, count how many pages it will end up having. Consider if you want it in color or in monochrome, as well as what type of paper you want it printed on. To help you recoup some of your costs, you can even reach out to local companies for sponsorship deals.

With everything settled and ready, all that’s left is to encourage everyone to practice as hard as they can. At this point, you’ve done all you can. But if you’ve done everything right, you’ll have helped everyone experience the thrill of performing live—no matter how small the audience. This makes for a fine reward after all your effort.

TOUGH SPACES THAT OFFER UNIQUE STORAGE POSSIBILITIES (UNDER STAIRS)

CF LOGO 2In my monthly “CF-NEWSLETTER” for Closet Factory-Fort Lauderdale I recently highlighted developing ideas for underneath stairs. Open or closed, these spaces are often difficult to design for and many times are wasted or mis / underutilized. Odd angles, varying heights, hard to use depths, make spaces underneath staircases a real challenge,

There are plenty of pictures in the public domain to show great ideas for using these spaces. Here are just some ways to get a lot more out of under stair spaces:

  • Reading Nook
    Simple Open Shelving
Variety of Cabinetry and Pull-Out Caddies
    Mini-Home Office
    Mini-Mud Room
    Library Shelving
    Pet Quarters
    Wine-Bar / Wine Storage
    Central Command for Home Automation
    Collectibles Display Area

Of course there are so many more ideas but these are the most common. As a Designer, it’s actually fun to design for these spaces because they offer interesting challenges that require creative solutions. And since there are absolutely no “RULES” for spaces like these, i.e., no particularly rigid style requirements to adhere to, you can pretty much do whatever you want, always with an eye toward the ultimate goal for the space. As I always guide people in my Houzz.com commentary, begin each project at “30,000 feet” and start by focusing on FUNCTION FIRST. Style, color, texture, etc., will fall into place as you descend.

Web

Finally, for tough spaces like underneath a staircase, you will find it immensely easier if you include a Professional Designer, someone who has tackled these normally difficult spaces multiple times who can help you avoid the numerous additional errors that come with them. While I mentioned that there are no hard and fast rules, there are tons of additional design dilemmas that you can learn from, or avoid by enlisting the help of someone who has already seen them made by others. In any case, the result will be a total winner since 99% of the time these spaces are mostly wasted. You get a terrific space that you probably didn’t ever consider as offering any utility at all. You may even find yourself spending lots of time in your understairs “nook” due to the cozy and out of the way solitude it can offer. And trust me, on top of all the other benefits, it’s always nice to do a project where 100% of the money you invest comes back to you in a re-sale!

Now get going and have fun designing your new space!
