Taking Care Of Your Gutters

Caring for Gutters

The gutters of a home play a vital role, and they are crucial for the structure of a home’s roof. The main purpose of gutters is to manage the water flow of the roof by making sure the water flows in the opposite direct from the home. When the water is permitted to stay on the roof and thump the side of the house, it can cause tremendous damage. It is imperative that gutters are maintained and cleaned on a recurring basis to avoid clogs. Gutters should be looked over at least once prior to each season.

Inspecting The Roof And Gutters

Gutters should be consistently examined to make certain that they are draining properly. When gutters hold water, the risks of harboring debris, insects, and other objects increases. The weight of stagnant water can also cause gutters to pull away from the fascia.

When inspecting gutters, it is important to examine the slope of the gutters by placing a garden hose at the opposing end of the downspout. Turn the water on and check carefully how it drains. The water should flow effortlessly down the gutter and exit the downspout. While inspecting the gutters, it is an ideal time to inspect the roof as well for any wreckage, vulnerable sports, and broken shingles.

What About Gutter Guards?

Gutter guards are advertised as a means of helping gutters resist clogging from leaves, as well as water and debris – thus saving the homeowner from what could be a dangerous household task. Cleaning gutters is not easy!

The 5 main types of gutter protection include:

  • Mesh: This type of guard is composed of metal sheets filled with minute holes affixed to the roof shingles and covers the gutter.

  • Reverse Curve: This gutter guard moves the water downward while directing the leaves to the ground.

  • Bottle Brush: These gutter guards are manufactured from bristles that face perpendicular within the gutter. The debris sits on top as the water floats away.

  • Nylon: Nylon gutter protectors work quite well during winter because of their distinct design, which stops snow from accumulating and freezing.

  • Foam Gutter Protection: These are produced from plastic that fit right into the gutter, and assists with preventing debris from going into the gutter.

Note: Homeowners working on the curb appeal of their home should consider painting their gutters. This task does much more than increase the appeal of a home, when done correctly, painting gutters can also help improve the lifespan of the gutters as well.

The Benefits of Built In Wardrobes

wardrobe custom

Are you wondering whether you should include a buit in wardrobe when you build your new home? The answer is yes. Built-in wardrobes have many advantages over their freestanding counterparts. Let’s take a look at five excellent reasons, according to Sliderobes, to consider designing a built in wardrobe for your home.

1. Get Exactly the Wardrobe You Want

You can design a built-in wardrobe exactly as you want it, and you can specify exactly the amount of space you want it to occupy. This is true even if you are working with plans that incorporate oddly-shaped or narrow rooms.

Does it drive you crazy that regular wardrobes don’t offer enough space for you to put your shoes away? When you design a built-in wardrobe, you can specify a shoe rack that’s designed for exactly the number of shoes you own. You can choose shelves, racks or baskets that would suit the belongings you plan to store in the wardrobe.

2. Smart Use of Space

Have you ever owned a wardrobe that didn’t quite fit in the space where it would have been most convenient to have it?

Have you ever had problems positioning the wardrobe in your room, because it seemed to look awkward no matter where you moved it to?

Have you ever ended up with wasted space in between the wardrobe and a wall, because it was too small to fill the allotted space?

When your wardrobe is built into the room it’s meant for, you’ll never have these worries. The wardrobe will fit seamlessly into the room, and it won’t waste any space whatsoever.

3. Just the Right Materials and Finishes

The woods, materials and finishes in your built-in wardrobe will coordinate flawlessly with the rest of the materials in the room where you are building it.

4. New, Contemporary Style

A built-in wardrobe differentiates your new home from older homes that don’t usually come with such contemporary features. It would be costly to remodel an older home to include a built-in wardrobe, but when you are building a new home it makes good sense to take advantage of the opportunity to include exactly the wardrobe you want.

5. A Smart, Tangible Investment for the Future

A built-in wardrobe is a tangible investment that you can use and enjoy. If you maintain it well, it can increase the value of your home, and make your home more attractive to potential buyers when the time comes to sell your home.

These advantages are well worth considering when you decide whether or not to include a built in wardrobe in your new home.

How Recent High School Graduates can Manage and Prevent Debt

It seems like debt piles up all too quickly when you graduate high school. From paying for college to buying a new car to moving to a different town for school or work, there are a lot of new expenses that you need to adjust to when you leave your parents’ house for the first time. It may feel like it is impossible to keep yourself out of debt and create a stable financial future for yourself.

It is true that most high school graduates will need to take on some kind of debt initially to get them started, but this does not mean that you have to live with debt for the rest of your life. You can use credit wisely to create a better financial future for yourself. Here are some ways that recent high school graduates can manage debt and prevent excessive debt.

Take steps to build your credit

Your credit score is something that will be extremely important to you throughout your adult life. You will need to have good credit in order to have the things that you want in life, house, car, etc., so it is a good idea to start trying to build your credit score as soon as possible. One way that high school graduates can do this is by getting a credit card. Plan for the future with your student loans

One of the biggest expenses you will face after high school is paying for college. Most students will need to use student loans, but many adults struggle to pay off their student loans decades after they have graduated. Instead, you should have a plan for your student loan repayment before you even begin college. Most importantly, only take out what you need to pay for your school expenses and try to start paying off the loans as soon as possible. These actions will help you free yourself from student loan debt sooner.

Save money on new necessities

As was mentioned before, graduating high school comes will a lot of new expenses that many students did not have to pay for before. Living expenses make up a big part of this, and they add up quickly when you are unprepared for them. You can find a lot of ways as a student to lower your living expenses, like going to http://www.directenergyrates.net/ to find the best deals on energy for your home, living with roommates, or using student discounts at your local stores. Find out what deals you qualify for and combine as many as possible to save the most money.

Plan for emergencies

No matter how much effort you put into your new budget and how much you plan for your debt repayment, there is always a chance that an emergency will arise. It is a good idea to have an emergency fund set up, but many young people do not have the available funds to do this. Find out what other options you might have for getting extra cash in an emergency, like a small loan from TitleBucks, and know the best way to use it in case of an emergency.

6 Tips to Reduce Heating Bills

There are several reasons why each of us would want to reduce our heating bills. Firstly, of course, there is always a reason to save money by cutting down on unnecessary expenditures. Secondly, conserving energy is an environment friendly measure that helps to lower your carbon footprint. Producing as well as utilizing energy uses up precious resources and adds to pollution, which we can ill afford.

Lowering your energy bills is good for your pocket and good for the earth. We look at how heating and cooling Chicago or indeed heating in any other town or city can be done in a more energy efficient and economical manner.

1.     Insulation

Home insulation is important to prevent heat loss from the house. Older doors and windows may have some leaks and could be letting in more cold air, having to make your heating system work harder. So make sure that there are no leaks and that you use your drapes effectively to trap heat within the room. Attic insulation in particular can have a very beneficial impact on the home’s heating systems.

2.     Monitor your air quality

Clean filters and ensure that your ducting systems are clear. Not doing so will also increase energy consumption significantly.  During the colder months, when the heating system is working very hard, the filters can get clogged more frequently. Ensure that they are cleaned more frequently and if required, replaced. Filters, when improperly maintained, could lead to expensive repairs too.

3.     Use an energy efficient system

Ensure that the heating system you’re using isn’t power hungry. An energy efficient furnace could help you save up to 60% on your utility bills. Also ensure that maintenance and service checks are up to date. It is also possible to use a device such as a programmable thermostat to lower heating bills. These devices help you conserve energy by letting you program your heating system to go lower after you’re in bed. You can program it to lower or switch off while you’re out and to come on again when you’re due back.

HeatingBill

4.     Check the water heating settings

Do you really need the water in the taps to be that hot? Turning down the water heater settings can also help to significantly lower your heating bills.

5.      Use your ceiling fan

Many experts recommend that you use your ceiling fan in winter – for heating the room. As well we know, warm air rises while cool air descends. A ceiling fan will help circulate the warm air trapped at the top of the room to bring it lower and make the entire room warmer and more comfortable.

6.     Insulate yourself

Wear an extra layer when you’re hanging around the house. Place an extra blanket on the bed while you sleep. Use a fluffy throw to cuddle under as you watch a favorite movie on TV. Keep yourself warmer so that you don’t mind turning down the heating a bit. According to experts, each degree that you lower your heating thermostat can noticeably impact your heating bills.

Breathing for a Better, Happier You

Proper breathing is often ignored but is extremely essential to maintain your health and fitness. By breathing slowly and deeply, you ensure that sufficient oxygen is taken into your lungs and thereby into your bloodstream. Oxygen is required to get rid of various toxins that build up in our systems one of which is carbon dioxide. Your cells and muscles require fresh and sufficient oxygen in order to function properly and avoid fatigue, and as we age, there is automatic reduction in blood oxygen levels which can be improved with proper breathing.

There are several breathing techniques that can be followed to improve your breathing patterns, including deep relaxed breathing, the relaxing sigh, and the rolling breath. Whichever the technique, it is essential that the diaphragm is properly used. When you breathe, you should be aware of your diaphragm pulling down to expand your lungs and increase the inflow of oxygen, and then pushing back up to expel the carbon dioxide.

Use the Diaphragm

Utilizing the diaphragm in simple deep breathing, means being aware of your rib cage expanding, including the opening out of your floating ribs, and expanding your abdomen so that the diaphragm has the space to expand. You have to also lift up the upper chest and allow it to expand. At the end of your inhalation, reverse the process by letting your chest fall, contracting your ribs, and pulling your belly in. The process of this slow technique can further enhance lung capacity if you count as you breathe in and out. Start with five, and gradually build up the number of counts on each breath, making sure the length of breathing in and out is the same, and that you are comfortable with that time period.

Resistance Training

Deep breathing exercises can be enhanced with the use of a breath trainer. A breath trainer applies the principles of resistance training to your respiratory muscles which include those around your rib cage as well as your diaphragm. As you practice these exercises, your lung capacity will gradually increase, leading to improved intake of oxygen and increased amounts of oxygen in circulation, which helps with your capacity to burn fat.

Breathing-Diaphragm

Meditative Breathing

Another simple exercise is breath moving. In this technique, imagine that your breath moves to the top of your head when breathing in, and down to the base of the spine and perineum as well as to the bones you sit on when breathing out. This helps in improving your concentration.

Benefits of Proper Breathing

Proper breathing has several other benefits which include

  • an improved immune system
  • a calmer nervous system
  • better gut function
  • improved blood and lymphatic circulation
  • increased concentration
  • a better posture
  • better muscle and joint function
  • faster growth and repair overall

The physically movements of the diaphragm aid in giving you an internal massage of the heart, stomach intestines, pancreas and liver, increasing the circulation and movement of toxins through these organs. Besides the physical and physiological benefits to proper breathing, it also helps with mental and emotional well-being. By being physically more relaxed, stress levels decrease. A relaxed brain also releases more endorphins which are your body’s natural painkillers. It can deepen your meditation and powers of intuition, and help in connecting with your partner, both sexually and emotionally.

Lifestyle Choices That Can Reduce Risk of Stroke

A stroke is caused by the disturbance of blood supply to the brain – either hemorrhage or an interruption of blood supply to the brain. This can cause permanent neurological damage or even death. The seriousness of this medical emergency and the far-reaching consequences that it can have on an individual’s life as well as their family means that taking steps for prevention of a stroke are vitally important. Risk factors such as gender, age, genetic or ethnic predisposition are uncontrollable but there are lifestyle alterations you can make to reduce your risk.

People who have already had a stroke will have to take the guidance of their health care provider or nursing home facility for rehabilitation. However, if you have never had a stroke you should do your best to prevent it with the help of lifestyle choices to reduce its risk:

Exercise

Regular exercise has so many benefits for the body: it not only helps the body remain healthy and fit, it helps to lower cholesterol, and keeps blood pressure within more manageable ranges. It also keeps the body’s circulatory system healthy and helps it function efficiently. However busy your schedule may be, it is important to take at least two and half hours out of your week (that’s just half an hour five times a week) to prioritize exercise.

Healthy eating

Adopt a simple rule about eating – eat food that is as close to its natural state as possible. This means food that is minimally processed, with low amounts of salts, fats, sugars and artificial additives such as preservatives, artificial colors or sweeteners and so on. Make food choices that include healthy fats and lean protein as well as complex carbs. Keep portions small and eat a variety of different veggies, fruits, whole grains, oily fish and lean meats. Regular exercise and a healthy, balanced diet are effective in helping maintain a healthy weight, which is seen to be effective in preventing strokes.

fast-stroke-symptoms

Cutting out bad habits

Excessive alcohol intake, smoking or tobacco use in any of its forms and use of banned substances have negative implications on a person’s health, their social interactions & relationships and even professional life. With so many reasons to give up these habits, it is actually self destructive to continue. Women should have no more than a drink a day and men, no more than 2 drinks a day. Smoking and drug use should be cut out entirely. Since these are all addictive substances it is important to get help if you find that quitting on your own is difficult.

Control other health conditions

High blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease are known risk factors that increase your chances of having a stroke. Take proper prescribed medications and keep your body weight within healthy ranges to control these conditions and reduce stroke risk.

Lower stress levels

Researchers are uncovering more and more negative health implications of stress. There is evidence to show that stress can contribute to conditions such as heart disease and obesity. There is also the fact that stress can lead to unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, binge drinking, overeating and so on. So controlling stress can have several beneficial impacts, directly and indirectly.

You can help yourself control stress by making some adjustments to your life to include healthy habits. Prioritize sleep – adequate, restful sleep is known to lower stress and promote overall health and wellbeing. Develop coping mechanisms to deal with daily stressors. Take time out for exercise and practice just 10 to 15 minutes of meditation each day to reap significant stress lowering benefits. Making these small changes to your lifestyle could have far-reaching beneficial impacts.

When Your Elderly Parents Don’t Want to Move

Convincing your elderly parents that a change needs to occur with their current living situation is not always the easiest task. This is especially true when they’re strong-willed and independent or in other words, stubborn. Moving to an assisted living home is not a transition that’s always welcomed with open arms, but it’s a necessary one when you can no longer do simple daily tasks or function safely in your own home without help. So what do you do when your elderly parents don’t want to move out of their home?

The following are a few ways you can help your parents ease into the idea of moving out of their beloved home and into a place that will provide them with care and comfort, as well as peace of mind for the rest of the family.

Bring up the Subject Regularly in Conversations

If you feel that your parents will eventually need assistance with their day to day chores in the near future then make it a point to regularly bring up the topic in conversations. Doing so long before they start showing signs of struggles with their daily routine will get them more accustomed to the idea of assisted living even if they don’t completely agree with it right away.

This approach is far better than springing up the issue one day, out of the blue or right after an incident has occurred. Don’t wait till something happens to your parents to talk to them about their future and well-being. Be proactive and start right now.

Identifying their Need for the Move

One reason why some parents can be resistant to the thought of moving out of their home is because they feel like they don’t need to. In their eyes, they’re still the young, hard working, independent, capable individual they were 10+ years ago. But you and everyone else know that this isn’t the case. Help your parents realize the reality of their situation by identifying their needs. Gently and lovingly raise awareness on any health issues they may be currently experiencing, give examples of simple tasks that they have a hard time of completing, show them that they do in fact need assistance and that’s OK.

Most parents don’t want to burden their children with emotional, physical or financial issues which is why they sometimes shy away from asking for help and it could also be another reason for rejecting the move. Show your parents that you generally care for their well-being by letting them know your worries and concerns. You’ll not only lift the burden off their shoulders, but when you’re the one approaching them with these issues they’re more likely to be open to your suggestions and ideas.

Helping them Realize the Benefits

Assisted living homes are more than just old and sick people. Nowadays you’ll find communities that are just as lively as the jazz club next door. Many elders have become even more active upon moving into a home. Not only do they have several activities, programs and events to keep them stimulated and entertained, but they no longer have to worry about daily chores, running errands or medical needs. This gives them ample leisure time throughout the day to focus on things that matter most to them, like learning a new craft, engaging in their favorite hobby or just relaxing without a care in the world.

Create a Support Team with Family and Friends

Get everyone involved in the process, including siblings, aunts, uncles, and even close family friends. The more people you have supporting your elderly parent’s possible move, the more likely they will start to warm up to the idea if not completely agree with it. Have a meeting with your family and close friends and discuss all the issues and concerns each member may have. The sooner you get everyone on the same page, the better and the more encouraged and empowered your seniors will feel about their decision to move.

Even if you don’t think your parents will need to move into an assisted living community any time soon or that day is still years down the road, you can begin to make the process and transition easier now by implementing the tips above. The sooner you do so, the better the response and the easier the move will be for everyone.

15 Ways to Enjoy Cheese Crackers

Cheese is one of the most amazing foods ever invented and for those of us who have been eating it in every way, shape or form we could find, you already know that cheese crackers are amazing.  For those not in the know, cheese crackers are simple cheese-infused crackers that are so flowing with the baked goodness of cheese, herbs, spices and delicious crispiness, they’re impossible to stop eating.  With the flavor overload that you get from cheese crackers, you’re sure to be in seventh cheesy heaven by the time you finish your first bag and move onto your second.

Fifteen Deliciously Unique Uses for Cheese Crackers

As you’ve probably guessed, I have a severe addiction to cheese crackers but that’s okay—you’re about to benefit from it!  Even if you only eat cheese crackers on occasion, you know as well as I do that when company comes over, it’s not enough to just dump something in a bowl and put it on the table.  What’s more is that with all the great ways you can enjoy cheese crackers, there are a million other recipes and unique twists out there so that you never have to “just snack” on cheese crackers again.

Here are 15 ways that you can enjoy the heck out of your cheese crackers today:

  1. Use them as a topping for your casseroles.  Casseroles are great when they have a crunchy topping, so stack some crumbled cheese crackers on top of yours before you pop it in the oven to finish (even the broiler).  This will give your dish that “wow” factor where nobody can figure out your secret ingredient.
  2. Put them into cheese dips to get a more authentic flavor and unique texture.  Most people think of using cheese crackers to get the dip out of the bowl, but why not put it in the dip?  Then, people will get a better texture and more cheesy goodness with every bite of the dip.  That’s always a good thing.
  3. Break them up and sprinkle them into soups.  When we were kids we always used to put crackers in our soup, but as we got older, that was just frowned upon (unless it’s chicken noodle soup in a diner!).  But who says that we just can’t class up the crackers we’re putting in the soup instead of forgetting it altogether?  Cheese crackers add crunch, flavor and elegance to any bowl or cup of soup.
  4. Use them as croutons on salads.  Want some more flavors in your salad but tired of simple croutons?  Go with cheese crackers instead; breaking them up to whatever size you want.
  5. Crumble them up and put them on top of your baked potatoes.  For some good cheesy crunch on your baked potato, use cheese crackers as a topper.  This is a great substitute if you don’t happen to have bacon or cheese around the house.
  6. Use them as a crunchy topping for baked mac and cheese.  Just like with casseroles, mac and cheese is delicious with a topping.  Forgo the breadcrumbs and throw some extra cheesy crunch into the mix with cheese crackers instead.
  7. Smash them up and use them to bread chicken cutlets.  You’ve probably already tried breading your chicken cutlets with crackers or Panko, so why not take it one step further and go with cheese crackers?  Simple toss the cutlet in mayo, roll in cheese crackers and bake!
  8. Crumble them up and use them in the stuffing for stuffed mushrooms.  Once again, substituting bread crumbs for cheese crackers provides a unique flavor that adds the “wow factor” to just about any dish.
  9. Top them with tomatoes, basil, onions and garlic to make bruschetta.  Plain, simple and delicious, while being just unique enough that you don’t lose the bruschetta interpretation.
  10. Place chunks of complimentary cheese flavor pairings on top of your Cheese Crackers.  Cheese and crackers?  Nice.  Cheese on cheese crackers?  Brilliant!
  11. Place asparagus on them and wrap them with prosciutto.  This is absolutely delicious.  If you don’t like asparagus, you can try a fig instead, but trust us, you won’t want to miss out on the big flavor combinations that cheese crackers, asparagus and prosciutto create.
  12. Top them with fish or sardines and bacon to make a cheesy take on modern surf and turf.  Whether you like salmon, tune or whatever, throw some combination of fish and meat onto Cheese crackers and you’ll have a delicious finger food.
  13. Use them to scoop out your favorite dips such as crab and french onion.  Simple and self-explanatory.
  14. Make mini pizzas with your Cheese Crackers by adding a little tomato sauce, basil, mozzarella and your favorite pizza toppings.  Toss it in your mouth instead of in the air!
  15. Eat them up!  It doesn’t matter how you eat them, they’re delicious any way you choose!
