5 Great uses for a shed in the summer

backyard shed

Many homeowners are not fully aware of the real potential and versatility of their backyard shed. They think that these giant boxes are only meant for storing gardening items, working tools, and other things that do not have a place inside their home. Even just a small lighting fixture and some insulation can turn their backyard shed into something great. What more if you can invest in pipelines and electric supply for your backyard shed?

The list of possibilities that you can transform a backyard shed into a functional space is only limited by your imagination. Here are 5 of the best ideas on how to use your shed this summer season. If you don’t already have one, start planning your own shed now.

  1. Home Gym

For fitness enthusiasts, having your own space for exercise can definitely keep you motivated in following a strict workout plan. Now you don’t need to drive all the way to crowded gyms or annoy people inside the house with all the noise, smell, and dripping sweat.

For your gym shed, be sure to install sturdy floors so you don’t need to worry about dropping free weights on the floor. Make sure that the area is wide enough for you to perform lunges, jumps, push-ups, and other personal workout routines with ease. Install ventilation units to allow cool outdoor air to flow inside.

  1. Art Studio

Some art enthusiasts draw inspiration and focus from working outdoors. Summer season is definitely a great time to go out and start creating your artworks. Before preparing your art studio, make sure to position your shed where it receives the best natural lighting. Install glass panels on the roof to allow more sunlight to pass through and to cut down on electricity costs. Add fans or open up one side of the shed for better ventilation.

  1. Man Cave

By adding a television, refrigerator, and a few comfortable chairs, your ordinary backyard shed can instantly become a man’s favorite hangout place. Transforming a shed to man cave will require you to install an electricity supply and some form of a heating system especially when the winter season arrives. Always keep a good supply of drinks and snacks so you can enjoy longer happy hours.

  1. Greenhouse

Summer is also a great time for garden-loving individuals to spend time in their hobbies. Keep delicate plants away from pests, pets, and playing children by storing them in a secure backyard greenhouse. Replace the roofing with fiberglass skylight panels or translucent panels to allow sunlight to pass through. During the winter, you can add more insulation and install mounted lights to help your plants thrive even in the cold weather.

  1. Rest House

Staying outdoors has its amazing way of brightening our moods amidst the stress that we get from work and our busy lives. Decorate your shed any way you want it too. Install relaxing lighting and add a cozy dining set if you want to enjoy your family dinner outdoors. You may also add a television or play soothing music to help you destress.

3 Tips to choosing between ductless or central air conditioning

hvac

If you are looking to install a new air conditioning system in your home, you might be wondering what type you are going to choose. There are many different options to choose from. Two of these air conditioning systems are ductless and central air conditioning.

A ductless air conditioning system is also known as mini split air conditioning system. It uses a slim cable between the condenser and a box on the wall. With this, vents are not needed on the floor and no ductwork is involved. On the other hand, a central air conditioning system, the cool air is distributed to the entire house through the air handler on the furnace into a ductwork.

Both types of air conditioning system provide a number of different advantages, but it would still depend on what your needs are. If you do not know how to begin, here are 3 tips to choosing between a ductless and a central air conditioning system.

  1. Determine if you have an existing ductwork.

If you are installing an air conditioning system in a new house that has no ductwork, then it would be more economical to install a ductless system. All you will need is a 3-inch hole in the wall to run the cable through. This is also a good option if you live in a property where there is not enough space in the walls or ceilings to build a duct system. However, if your house already has a pre-installed duct system, it is more cost effective to choose a central air conditioning system since all you need to do is just hook up your new unit to the existing ventilation.

  1. Determine which air conditioning system works best with the size of your home.

If you are installing an air conditioning system in a large property, chances are, a ductless system does not have enough power to provide cool air. Properties or homes that are larger than 2000 – 2500 square feet work better and more efficient with a central air system in the long run. If you are considering adding more rooms in the future, you might want to choose a ductless system. However, one thing to consider would still be to determine if the unit you are going to purchase works best with the size of your room. This is done by checking its BTU rating. Measure the dimensions of your room by multiplying the length by the width to get the square footage. After that, match it with the BTU rating of the air conditioning unit. As per rules, each square foot is equivalent to 20 BTU. If you want to check different units with their BTU rating before purchasing, you can go check on sites such as Air Conditioning Online.

  1. Ask yourself if you are sensitive to noise.

This may be an insignificant tip, but in the long run, it is important to know this beforehand. Most central systems are louder, and it can potentially affect your sleep at night. As a general rule, a ductless system emits lesser noise.

4 Tips to Avoiding Foreclosure in Los Angeles

la home

If your house is on a mortgage loan, then you surely know about foreclosures and how dangerous they are. In today’s industry, a single miss on your mortgage payment can deal a great blow to your credit rating. And once your credit rating decreases, you will find it hard to get bigger loans, not to mention, find companies willing to work out a loan with you. Once you miss more payments on your mortgage, your property will inevitably be foreclosed and will be forcefully taken from you by your creditors as payment to your unpaid balance. This is why you must always take care of your credit rating and avoid foreclosures. To help you with that, we have listed below 4 tips that can definitely help you.

  1. Contact your creditor as soon as you miss a payment

As stated above, a credit rating is very important. You must always take care of your reputation especially in dealing with debts. If you establish yourself as a faithful mortgagor, then you will not suffer foreclosures even if you miss several payments. And the way to do this is by keeping open communication with your creditor. If you miss a payment, visit them immediately and inform them of your current situation and how you will handle it. As long as you can guarantee that you can make the next payments, then your house will not be at risk. If in case you are in deeper financial trouble, then you may ask for a renegotiation of terms like an extended term or a lowered interest and periodic payment.

  1. Ask the Government for help

There are also certain government agencies that can help house owners in dealing with mortgages especially if you are at risk of foreclosure. It also works to seek legal help from the government by knowing your rights as the debtor under a mortgage. Study the guidelines for foreclosures and creditor-debtor relationships. The government can also help you by granting you loans or assistance in dealing with your mortgage. As long as you have the necessary documents, like tax declarations, indigenous certificates, senior citizens id, and other related documents and certifications then you can definitely find help from the government.

  1. Avoid Scams

Desperate times call for desperate measures. And if a person is desperate, he is sometimes very susceptible to even the most gullible tricks and scams. If you are desperate, remember to be calm in deciding things and your options. If you are at a high risk of foreclosure, then never sign a document without reading and understanding them. There are many cases where there are companies that approach people claiming that they can help them get out of foreclosure immediately by paying a fee and signing a particular document. What they don’t know is that it is actually a deed of sale or an agreement relinquishing their ownership of the property and making them a tenant – which is a greater and harder problem to deal with. Thus, always make sure to read and understand every document you are signing. Doing a background check with the people you are talking to can also be a good help.

  1. Sell Your Property Fast

If your house is going to be repossessed soon anyway, then why not make the first move and sell it for cash. With the way the house prices fluctuate, selling it yourself and receiving a cash to help settle the debt might actually be the solution for the debt. While you may lose your home, it is actually better to sell it rather than having the company do it. Who knows, you might sell it a higher value than your unpaid balance which can help you get another house soon. Innovative Garden Lighting Ideas for Summer Nights

Garden with lights

A well-designed garden is undoubtedly one of the best parts of any modern home. It adds a new dimension to the entire property, enabling you to enjoy the benefits of the great outdoors by simply stepping outside.

Whether it’s for peaceful moments by yourself or magical times spent with friends and family doesn’t matter. Making the most of that time in the garden should be top of your agenda. The best way to increase those possibilities is to extend the amount of time that can be spent out there, and lighting is the key.

Use these lighting options to make sure the garden is as accommodating in the evening as it is during the day and you cannot go wrong.

Wall Lights

In truth, the bulk of your evening garden activities are likely to be spent near the building areas. Therefore using the walls to your advantage is always advised.

Stainless Steel outdoor wall lanterns, such as those available at Sherwood Lighting, work particularly well for providing a decent level of brightness. Moreover, the contemporary appearance often works very well with modern decking and patio areas. For a more traditional vibe, electrical hanging lanterns are an ideal alternative. Coupled with candles (real of LED) placed on tables, you’ll enjoy a great vibe.

Motion-detecting security lights can be a very useful addition too. Advanced ones even offer a constant setting to provide an intense light to a relatively large space. Aside from being practical, they add protection too. What more could any homeowner ask for?

Solar Garden Lights

We all wish we had the funds to install solar roof panels. But while this may not be possible, you can at least have a positive impact by using greener garden lighting.

Small solar lights aren’t only eco-friendly. Their small, portable nature also offers optimum levels of versatility. Get creative by using them to light up pathways and flower bed perimeters. Not only will it add a little light to extend garden time, but it’ll create a uniquely beautiful appearance too.

The fact that you can use them to light up the whole yard can also help avoid trips and injuries.

Garden Heaters

Technically, garden heaters don’t fall under the category of lights. Nonetheless, their ability to provide a warm glow to decking areas should not be underestimated.

In truth, the heating facilities are just as crucial as the lighting. Therefore, you should probably invest in one regardless of whether you need it for light purposes. Still, that byproduct of the heaters can create a very relaxed vibe when summer BBQs are winding down into the night.

Alternatively, it can set a very romantic scene for home date nights.

Water Feature Lights

Swimming pools are seen as the greatest home luxury imaginable. If you are lucky enough to have one, you should be eager to make the most of it.

Lighting from underneath the pool can extend swim times, but also offer a peaceful beauty for when you are relaxing on the grass or patio. Alternatively, an LED light show can crank up the party atmosphere to another level. If the pool is shielded by cover, you may also want to install lights here.

Even if you don’t boast a swimming pool, you may well be lucky enough to have a fountain or another water feature. Whether it’s a built-in lamp or normal spotlights pointed in that direction is up to you. Either way, illuminating those calming features can work wonders.

3 Tips to Fixing a Leaking Shower

There are times when you are going about your daily life and something breaks in your home which puts a damper on things. Having a malfunction in your home can put a strain on your plans for the day as it means you may have to drop everything and fix the broken object. Sometimes items that need to be fixed are not so straightforward and need professional assistance to remedy the problem. For example, if you experience a leak in your shower, you will likely want to call a professional like the Plumbing Force right away. Before doing so, here are some simple tips to fix a leaking shower.

  • Try to determine where the leak is coming from. Sometimes leaks can be a simple fix. If you notice that the leak is coming from your showerhead, this is likely a dilemma that you can remedy on your own without professional assistance. To do so, turn the water off and remove the showerhead. You will want to detach your showerhead and examine it to check for dirt and grime that could be stuck in the water spout holes. You will then want to clean your shower head with hot water and some vinegar. This will break down and wash away any dirt, grime, or scum that has built up over time. Then check the washer and see if it is worn. If it is, you will need to replace it as it is probably causing the leak. Replace the showerhead and make sure that it is tightened before starting the water again.
  • Leaking sealant. If you notice that water is leaking from around your bathtub or shower stall, you likely have a sealant issue. If your caulk or sealant has not be touched up or repaired, it will deteriorate over time. To fix this problem, you will need to peel off the old and clean the edges of the floor really good. Be sure that all the mold and built up dirt that could have grown in that area has been disposed of. After the area is dry, be sure to put on some gloves. Add caulk or sealant appropriate for your shower and flooring. It is important to make sure that you purchase caulk or sealant that will last and will not deteriorate quickly.
  • If you have a crack in your shower. If you experience a crack in your shower door or wall that is causing a leak, you will likely want to get some professional help. If you are able to replace the shower walls and door on your own, this is great but typically the common person is unable to do so. Calling for assistance in this situation can be helpful so that you can determine the right way to fix the problem so that it does not happen again. You may just need to patch it up or you may need to replace it. Whatever you need to do, you will likely need proper measurements and help in deciding what is the best course of action for what you can afford at the moment.

Reasons Why You Need To Have Your Air Conditioner Serviced

air conditioned home

Almost every household today has at least one air conditioning unit. As a matter of fact, people no longer look at air conditioners as a luxury but rather a necessity because of climate change. It is even estimated that by 2050 around 1.5 billion air conditioners are going to be installed.

There is no denying that the demand for cooling systems is rapidly increasing. This explains why companies such as Brisbane Air are offering air conditioning installation and cleaning services to cater to the millions of homeowners within the area who owns heating and cooling units.

Now you might be wondering why you need to have your air conditioner serviced. As soon as you purchase an air conditioner you will immediately reap all of its benefits. During a hot and stifling day, you will feel comfortable and satisfied with the cool air your air conditioner emits. Unfortunately, if you fail to have it serviced on a regular basis, you will eventually notice the dramatic difference not just in the performance and efficiency of your air conditioner unit but you will also see a stark difference once you receive your monthly electricity bill.

Here’s our explanation why you need regular servicing.

First of all, your air conditioner is just like any other appliance in your home. If you don’t clean it, it will accumulate dust and dirt. When dust and dirt clog up your cooling system, don’t expect it to spew cool air like it used to. Air conditioner experts warn that for every year you skip maintenance your air conditioner will lose five percent of its efficiency. Simple math will tell you that if you fail to have your air conditioner serviced for more than a year, let’s say three years, expect your air conditioner to diminish in efficiency by fifteen percent. This decline will significantly alter your air conditioner’s performance.

Regularly servicing your air conditioners will help address any minor problems that when left untreated could grow into much-complicated problems, problems that might become too costly to repair. In a way, servicing your air conditioner on a timely basis will minimize expensive repairs in the future. The earlier problems are detected, the better. But it’s never too late. If you haven’t serviced your air conditioner, there is still hope because according to research, resuming air conditioner servicing will restore ninety-five percent of its original performance.

If you are wondering what your electricity bill has to do with servicing, here’s our explanation. If your air conditioner no longer functions efficiently, it works doubly hard to keep up. However, doing so also increases its energy consumption. Consequentially, this will spike up your electricity bill. So don’t wonder if you’re paying twice as much as you used to. The reason is all because you are too lazy to have your air conditioner serviced.

Regular cleaning is not just about saving money; it’s also about your health. If mould and mildew starts thriving in your air conditioner, it can cause a number of health conditions such as allergies, asthma, infection etc. To avoid this, regular servicing and cleaning is required.

What to Consider When Choosing a Front Door for Your Home

Beautiful Front Door

This guest article was put written by by Zak Harris, site manager at www.compositedoorexperts.co.uk

Finding the right front door for your property is one of the most important decisions you make when it comes to home improvement. As the first part of your home that visitors will come into contact with, your front door says a lot about your property as a whole and goes a long way to setting any first impression others will have.

However, when it comes to choosing a front door, there are a number of key considerations that need to be made. It isn’t merely a case of finding a fit that suits the style of your property, instead, you need to consider a number of factors including the bespoke nature of your new front door, and ways in which it can be customised to your exact tastes. As well as this you need to ensure your new door is secure which often means checking what materials it is manufactured from.

This quick guide will look at these three aspects individually below to help you make the best choice for your home. When it comes to any aspect of home improvement, personal taste weighs heavily in the decision you make but by taking these factors into consideration you will be well on your way to finding the perfect front door for your property.

Choosing a Bespoke Front Door

When it comes to finding a front door for your home than a bespoke choice may well be the best fit. Although anything of bespoke nature may send alarm bells ringing regarding cost, in terms of front doors this isn’t necessarily the case.

It is more often than not the case that you will need to manufacture your door to exact specifications needed for you property anyway so brands can also cater to your bespoke needs as well. In the case of composite doors, bespoke is actually the ‘standard’ model with no two front doors often the same.

This level of customisation is excellent for homeowners looking to add their own personal touch to the exterior of their home and will definitely mean you won’t be looking to replace your front door any time soon.

Security

As the most common entrance and exit point of your property it is vitally important that any front door you choose is safe and secure. Just like windows, as entrances to your home, both front and back doors are targets for any potential intruders.

Fortunately, modern front doors come with a number of added security features, from double locks through to spy holes all of which can help to protect your property. Other modern features include fingerprint sensors and keypads to replace traditional locks which can easily be breached.

What Will Your Front Door be made of?

Leading on from security, what your door is made of has a huge impact on the overall quality of your front door. Composite doors were mentioned briefly earlier in this article and they are by far the most popular choice of modern front doors on the market.

There are many reasons for this, but it is mainly due to the way in which they’re manufactured, which offers a heightened level of security as well as taking the best aspects of before timber and uPVC doors and combining them into one.

Amazing Wonders of Dark Chocolate You Should Know

choc

Chocolate has been perceived as something unhealthy, especially during our childhood years. Our parents and guardians would often tell us that if we eat too much chocolate, we’ll get diabetes or cavities. Yikes!

However, hard evidence suggests that chocolates are not villains to our bodies. Although there are some unnecessary chocolates to eat, dark chocolates are a great source of many nutrients and health benefits. Stay tuned to find out more!

What Makes Dark Chocolate Healthy?

Dark chocolate is made from cacao seeds/cocoa tree. With this alone, we can say that dark chocolate is an excellent source of antioxidants like tea and coffee.

Taken in moderation, dark chocolate can give you a lot more benefits than just additional antioxidants.

Antioxidants fight off your body from free radicals. This is because dark chocolate has antioxidant components such as flavonoids, catechins, and polyphenols. But aside from this, antioxidants also reduce the signs of aging, as is most commonly advertised.

Here are some more key benefits you can get from eating dark chocolate:

#1 It may help improve blood flow and lower blood pressure.

There are a lot of myths about chocolates but even more health issues surrounding chocolate in general.

This benefit sounds very far-fetched if you think about it, but milk chocolate is way different from dark chocolate. By dark chocolate, we mean those bars that are 70 to 85% pure. This is because of the flavanols in dark chocolate.

Flavanols help strengthen and stimulate the lining of your arteries. This, in turn, helps produce more Nitric Oxide or NO. With more NO’s, your arteries relax and lower blood flow resistance.

However, just because this is so, doesn’t mean you should consume bars and bars of dark chocolate. Remember, the benefits are there, small but significant. At the same time, it also still needs to be paired up with proper diet and exercise.

#2 Dark chocolate might be good for your skin.

We’ve already established how dark chocolate helps fight off cholesterol, free radicals, and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, it also helps stimulate blood flow. On top of that, it also helps improve the density of your skin cells and increase hydration.

This is what makes dark chocolate good for your skin. So if you want to have that naturally hydrated and sun-protected skin, eating dark chocolate in moderation might help.

After all, just as we mentioned earlier, the antioxidants in dark chocolate help fight signs of aging such as wrinkles, blemishes and the like.

#3 Dark Chocolate helps stimulate your brain.

Ever heard of tips like eating a bar of chocolate before or while taking an exam? While this might seem a bit funny, there’s a lot of truth to it. Dark chocolate improves the blood flow not only in your arteries (or heart) but also in your brain.

Due to its properties such as theobromine and caffeine, dark chocolate helps with the brain’s cognitive function and even verbal fluency.

But we don’t even have to go to science anymore for this, but you might notice how you feel much more alert after taking a bite of chocolate.

And what we just mentioned, is the science behind that. So the next time you take an exam or feel the need to be more alert/awake, it might be a good idea to have some dark chocolate. It might help you focus more and remember things.

Recipes for Eating Healthy Dark Chocolate

#1 Eat it as a sandwich spread

Dark chocolate can be consumed by spreading it on top of your crunchy toast. There are many products out there in the market that has melted dark chocolate for you to try readily. Personally, this kind of meal is what I always eat before or after I work out.

Or more accurately, when I’m short on time.

As some people might overlook, dark chocolate spreads or cacao, in general, is a good source of protein. So, if you have a sweet tooth craving after a workout or before going to school, a dark chocolate sandwich spread might be a good idea.

#2 Use it to make fondues

Berries are also a good source of antioxidants just like cacao. So, just imagine some antioxidants you will probably take in by eating strawberries (or any berries) dipped in dark chocolate.

For this, all you will be needing are just chill berries and a melted bar of dark chocolate. Preferably 70 to 85% concentrated dark chocolate bars. Make sure not to add too much sugar because this will only cancel out the benefits

If you can’t stand the taste of it, then use organic or natural sweeteners. However, again, this is something that should still be taken in moderation, despite the benefits.

#3 Replace your milk chocolate with dark chocolate when making cakes.

Whether it be your oven baked cake, mug lava cake or your refrigerated non-bake cake, dark chocolate can always be a good and a healthier substitute for milk chocolate. But the best part is, you won’t even be able to tell the difference.

With the right ingredients and measurements, it can taste just as good!

For mug lava cakes and refrigerated no bake cake, again, you can make use of melted dark chocolate. Just add a bit of butter and powdered sugar (or any healthier sweetening options) to get the right consistency and texture, then voila!

As for baked dark chocolate cakes, you can use the dark chocolate as filling or icing. Or even the natural flavor of the sponge or chiffon cake itself. Dark chocolate cocoa that is unsweetened can also give you that same effect.
