Every April, most Americans have to pull out their wallets and pay Uncle Sam. Likewise, countries across the world demand that their citizens pay up through different forms of taxation.
As frustrating as they may be, the taxes we know and don’t love are actually pretty reasonable compared to a handful of the absolutely absurd taxes that have been levied throughout history. From bricks to bagels, lawmakers have thought of some pretty crazy things to tax.
From 1746-1845, England taxed its people for glass. The glass tax hurt the economy as few could afford glass in their homes. This tax, along with the window tax, was blamed for unhealthy, dark living conditions throughout England.
Although not actually a tax, but a tax exemption, this one made our list because it’s so unique and humorous. In New Mexico, if you’re 100 years old or older you are tax exempt. That is, assuming you aren’t a dependent. This law, enacted in 2002, is still in effect today.
