Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental and behavioral disorders. Psychiatric services are offered to patients who have mental health problems such as bipolar, depression and drug addiction. Addiction psychiatry majorly focuses on people facing drug issues and addiction. Psychiatric services are divided into two major parts:
- Inpatient psychiatric services- these are services given to a patient in a psychiatric facility.
- Outpatient services- this is a wide range of services and programs that a facility provides to outpatients who need individual comprehensive attention.
Psychiatric cases in the USA have been one of the situations that have used up a lot of money in their general economy. There are many types of psychiatric services used in the USA but some of them are more popular than others.
- Psychotherapy
This is also known as talk therapy since it involves a talking relationship between the therapist and patient. This type of treatment is used to analyze a variety of mental disorders such as depression and drug addiction. The main objective of this method of treatment is to control and eliminate disabling symptoms to help them function better. Psychotherapy is also done in different ways. There are ways that help patients change behavior and patterns, psychotherapies that help patients explore the effect of past relationships and experiences and psychotherapies that are tailored to help solve other problems in specific ways. Cognitive behavioral therapy involves problem-solving properties to improve the patient’s health. Psychotherapy can he handed on individual and group levels.
- Hospitalization
This is the type of treatment that a patient is admitted into a mental institution due to mental health conditions. A patient is admitted to a facility when they become suicidal and attempt to take their lives and that of others if they suffer very violent hallucinations and when they become a danger to themselves and others. A patient is hospitalized for the purpose of monitoring, stabilization of the condition and admission of fluids and nutrients.
- Medication
This method of treatment is where medication is administered to patients to enhance their mental health. Medication includes antidepressant that are used to treat depression, anti-anxiety medication that is given to patients who suffer from anxiety and panic attacks, mood stabilizers that are given to bipolar patients and antipsychotics that are given to patients suffering from schizophrenia and psychotic disorders.
- Counseling
They include group counseling which involves the involvement of various patients to talk about their emotions and feelings; helping them to relate with people better. Individual counseling is where a patient talks to the therapist on a more personal level hence enhancing their recovery since the doctor gives them a sense of security. Family counseling is where the family of the patient’s talks to the therapist so as to understand the patient’s condition and learn how to cope with the patient.
