Your Final Checklist for Staging a Community Dance Recital

cropped-csdrecital2011-favs-109911-680x287

If you think practicing for a dance recital is nerve-wracking, then you should try planning one. Compared to just mastering your assigned parts through practice and perseverance, staging something as “light” as a community dance recital already entails much more.

Even if you’ve sought out the help of events professionals, you’ll still have a lot on your plate. Be prepared to do a lot of budgeting, problem-solving, public relations, logistics, and even some stress reduction techniques. Though much of the work happens months ahead of your scheduled date, the real drama often starts around one month prior. Here are just some of the most important things that you should keep in your final checklist:

  1. Confirm the Venue

At this stage of your preparations, you want to make absolutely sure that your venue is ready for your recital. Just a quick confirmation via email or phone call is enough.

Being one of the first things that get sorted out doesn’t prevent it from having any last-minute complications. You want to make absolutely sure that you’ll have a place to perform in, and it all starts with confirming your venue.

  1. Have the Participants Try their Costumes and Props Out

By this time, the event participants should have the costumes and props that have been ordered. Make sure that everyone has tried on items that they are going to wear. At this point, there will still be enough time for adjustments and alterations when needed.

You want to have everyone’s costumes and props finalized in advance. This doesn’t just guarantee that everyone looks the part, it’s also important to keep everyone suitably comfortable and safe.

  1. Check Your Decorations

Decorate the venue as early as possible. This can include installing backdrops or preparing your props. Always take your ingress time into account. For some theaters and concert halls, rentals may be continuous for different clients year-round. This means that they might not be able to give you more than a few days of preparation.

This should be considered well in advance of the final date. During these occasions, enlisting the help of a professional might provide the least trouble.  For instance, aside from letting you rent their ready-made stage backdrops, a backdrop rental provider can also assist with the installation of these very important stage elements.

  1. Work Out the Schedule with Your Photographer

Of course, everyone wants a record of their big day. It’s the culmination of months of hard work and preparation. So make sure to have someone concentrated solely on covering your event.

Aside from assuring that your photographer will make it in on the day itself, you want to schedule a shoot during one of your dress rehearsals. This will allow you to better promote your show later on.

  1. Print Out the Programs

With your photo shoots hopefully done by this point, you can also include pictures of dress rehearsals in your layout to help promote the show.

Once you have everything laid out, count how many pages it will end up having. Consider if you want it in color or in monochrome, as well as what type of paper you want it printed on. To help you recoup some of your costs, you can even reach out to local companies for sponsorship deals.

With everything settled and ready, all that’s left is to encourage everyone to practice as hard as they can. At this point, you’ve done all you can. But if you’ve done everything right, you’ll have helped everyone experience the thrill of performing live—no matter how small the audience. This makes for a fine reward after all your effort.

Using Medical Tourism to Protect Your Retirement Savings

For most retirees, and those nearing the age of retirement, finding new ways to maintain and stretch their nest eggs is essential. When an unplanned medical issue threatens to ruin years of careful financial planning, the results can be devastating. It is tragic when so many seniors are forced into making the difficult decision of receiving the healthcare they need, or facing the possibility of running out of money much earlier than they anticipated.

There is one growing solution to the problem of the high cost of quality healthcare in the U.S. which many retirement-minded people are turning to. This solution is medical tourism.

What is medical tourism and why is it a smart choice for those nearing retirement?

There are many misconceptions surrounding the meaning of medical tourism, and for some it has acquired an undeserved dubious reputation. But medical tourism has been around for a long time and the  simple definition of medical tourism is when a patient travels for the sole purpose of receiving healthcare. While domestic medical tourism exists within the US, the majority of medical tourists go overseas to receive treatment.

There are many reasons for choosing medical treatment abroad as an alternative to US-based medical care. Often the biggest factors in making the decision to seek healthcare abroad is based on the substantial savings it provides patients. Choosing to go abroad for medical care can save patients up to three-quarters of the cost of having the same procedure performed in the United States. These savings can make a real difference for a retiree on a fixed income and/or without adequate insurance to cover a needed procedure.

Not only will medical tourism save money during retirement, but it may also help seniors retire sooner. Many people delay retirement out of fear of lack of funding to cover unexpected and costly medical expenses. Their fears are somewhat justified, as medical debt in the U.S. is the leading cause of bankruptcy. However, medical tourism helps to decrease medical costs, which decreases the amount of funding needed to retire comfortably.

Medical tourism also offers one particularly important benefit for seniors: the ability to receive medical care which is not currently available in the US. While the Food and Drug Administration’s goal is to protect the welfare of all Americans from untested and potentially harmful medical treatments, the approval process for new treatments takes time. For many seniors with life-threatening illnesses, it is time which they don’t have. Many potentially life-saving and life-improving experimental and established treatments are performed each year, and available now, in foreign countries. Many seniors find the benefits of an overseas treatment outweighs the risks of undergoing a non-FDA approved procedure.

Is overseas medical treatment a suitable option for me?

Medical tourism is a great option, but it is not always the best one for every senior. If you are considering going abroad for medical treatment, it is critical to have a frank discussion with your current health providers, as well as your family. Although the final decisions about your health are your own, getting input from those who care about your well-being is helpful.

In addition to feedback from your family and doctors, you should ask yourself these questions before choosing medical tourism:

  • How quickly do you need the procedure performed? Medical tourism which demands travel to a foreign country may require obtaining a visa, booking flights, arranging pre- and post-procedure accommodations, and researching foreign healthcare facilities. Many countries with a strong medical tourism industry make this as easy as possible. Mexico, for example, is a booming medical tourism country that is a closeby option for Americans and Canadians.
  • Have you developed a plan for aftercare once you have returned to the US? When your procedure is complete abroad, it is essential to have access to aftercare in the US. Speak with your doctors to determine if they will be able to provide follow-up care, including medications, once you return home.
  • Are the benefits of medical tourism really worth it for you? While medical tourism can save money and provide access to more medical treatments, it is important to decide for yourself if medical tourism is right for you.

Use your retirement funds to enjoy your golden years, not to pay costly medical bills!

Expensive medical bills don’t have to eat away your retirement funds. Medical tourism is a growing solution that provides safe, less expensive treatment. Over 1 million Americans sought medical treatment abroad last year, will you be the next one?

Prohibited Items of Interest – Are the Following Prohibited or Not?

Airport Security Items

Airport security is very similar to postal security in the prohibited items list share distinctive similarities. You’re probably wondering how such a subject could interesting enough to write an article about, when in truth the prohibited items list remains one of the most fascinating authoritative  write-ups in existence.

You’ll definitely be surprised by some of the items that are on the list and others less so. What’s really interesting though is looking at some of the things you CAN take with you and they compare to some of the stuff that’s prohibited. Here are some examples of items that are either inevitably on the prohibited items list, debatable or potentially lucky not to be present….

Knitting Needles

It’s good news for those interested in arts and crafts as knitting needles are not on the TSA Prohibited Items list. There are ways in which a knitting needle could be harmful to other passengers of course, with their long length and pointed (albeit unsharpened) end capable of causing damage.

Needles do of curse come in a range of different shape and sizes though and you couldn’t blame security from taking a set of knitting needles that look more like a pair of medieval spears. They should also preferably be made from plastic or wood if you hope to avoid issues at security.

Dead Bodies

You might be surprised to learn that taking a dead body with you from one country to another is not allowed. Not so surprising then?

Well you’ll be baffled to learn that there are plenty of people out there who do their utmost to take dead bodies with them onto flights in order to save on the high costs of transporting a loved one who is deceased. From hiding the body in carry-on bags to making them appear alive, these incidences have been reported.

Snow Globes

Liquids aren’t meant to be transported in hand luggage, which is we have smaller versions that do pass the 3.4 ounces maximum liquid content. Snow globes are a popular tourist souvenir that many people worry may be present on the prohibited items list.

Well, as long as they contain less than 3.4 ounces of liquid they can be brought on board, but they also need to be stored in a re-sealable security bag. You can tell if a snow globe is too big to take with you if it’s larger than a tennis ball.

Scissors

A pretty standard item for most people is scissors, which may be required for arts and crafts for instance. However, they cannot be brought onto any flight in any circumstance. Most scissors have blades which are longer than 4 inches and this won’t pass security officials.

They will be classed as a sharp object and, let’s face it, could potentially cause harm to other passengers. You can acquire scissors wherever you are, so don’t take them on a plane with you!

Ice Skates

Despite the presence of blades on this type of footwear, hockey players and figure skaters alike can rejoice in the fact that they won’t be prevented from taking their ice skates with them on a flight.

The blades may prove to be a danger to fellow passengers, security officials will allow them on a flight. Your skates should be stored in a small bag that can be classified as a carry-on item.

5 Great Pets For Beginners

Triops

So you’ve decided to try out being a pet owner, but you don’t quite know where to start. Getting a cute bunny or a fluffy kitten might seem like an amazing idea but if you don’t know if you can handle looking after a pet, it might be better off if you start with something a little less challenging.

Many people don’t realise that when they plan to buy a pet, that pet is there 24/7. That includes evenings, weekends and even holidays. This means you have to arrange a sitter, or even drop the pet off at a special pet hotel for larger or more complicated pets and this can be expensive. Added to that the check-up costs, vets fees and injections and it can really add up. So if you’re not sure about owning a pet, try out one of these great pets for beginners!

  1. Triops

Triops are cute little shrimp-like creatures with a whole lotta legs! They come in kits with everything you need to take care of your first generation Triops. The eggs are tiny and once hatched the Triops are tinier still. They will grow to about 7cm long and normally take about 2 weeks to grow. They eat many different types of plant food and live from 8 – 14 weeks, but from about 10 days old they will lay eggs which you can cultivate into a whole new generation of Triops, so one kit will last a long time.

  1. Ant Farm

Another pet you can buy in a kit, or you could try and steal a colony from the great outdoors. We always recommend getting a kit as you don’t really want to be disturbing any wild ants by taking them from an established colony. A kit contains a tank complete with dirt and tunnels for the ants, the Queen, workers, eggs and larva and food enough to kick start your colony. They require minimal care, but it is important to keep them in a warm, dark place as the ants are used to living underground! Feed them using drops of honey, or small fruits and vegetables as ants will eat almost anything.

  1. Betta Fish

Happy fish in small bowls, Betta fish come in a variety of colours and are pretty sturdy, for fish! The bowl will need regular cleaning and water changes in order to keep the alkali and acid levels equal, and a water snail makes a good addition as it helps to keep the tank or bowl clean. Betta fish only need feeding every other day or so and their colourful scales make a good first choice for a pet.

  1. Rats

They might sound like a strange pet to get a beginner, but honestly they make fantastic pets and are easy to look after. Rats get a really bad reputation from their less-than-hygienic wild cousins, but they are smart and affectionate creatures that love to play and hate being alone (so two or more rats are ideal). They groom themselves, can learn tricks and come in a variety of colours. They make better pets than hamsters or gerbils as they are slower and easier to hold for children and they rarely bite. All you need to do is play with them and feed and clean them out regularly!

  1. Brine Shrimp (Sea Monkeys)

The perfect science experiment slash short term pet for beginners. Available in kits for under £20, Sea Monkeys live for anywhere between a few weeks and a few months. They are tiny shrimp like creatures that you can watch hatch and grow in your own tank and kits provide most, if not all of the supplies you need to keep them happy and healthy for their lifespan.

In most cases, you’ll find out pretty soon whether or not you (or your kids) have what it takes to look after pets if you try these simple pets out. They may feel like only one or two steps up from that ever hilarious joke pet rock, but if you can’t handle looking after them, then something more difficult like a kitten or a puppy will certainly not work. Animals are living beings too and they deserve a good life, no matter how short. If you’re not sure you can handle the time or the responsibility, it might be better to stick with a Tamagotchi and that is the unfortunate truth.

3 Themed Wedding Ideas You Will Not Want To Miss

Organising your wedding can be a long and stressful process, particularly if you are obsessed with always being bigger and better than other weddings you have attended. Whether you want to go down the classic route, or you want something a little more contemporary, themed weddings are a great way of combining your joint hobbies with your love for each other, and they can be great fun.

The Issue of Raising the Bar
Nowadays we are so constantly connected with everyone else in our social circles, we see everything everyone else is doing and feel a need to ‘one up’ them. Humans are competitive creatures and sometimes social media does more harm than good. If you constantly feel the need to raise the bar, you can have expectations too high for the event you are planning, which just leads to disappointment in the end.

It is a good idea to stay off social media in the months leading up to the event so that your decisions are not swayed by what ‘Mark’ or ‘Aubrey’ happened to get involved in the other week. Focus on your own wedding and put everything else to one side.

Why are themed weddings so popular?
People like being unique, but they also like to show homage to the things they love. They want to raise the bar and do something nobody has ever done before, but they also like to stick to what they know and what they know works. Themed weddings are a great way of combining these two needs and desires to reach a suitable conclusion.

Plus the fun thing about themed weddings is that they can be a real laugh. People can choose to be as subtle or go all out, it is their choice. You can also have unorthodox music and games at your wedding (Darth Vader’s theme while walking down the aisle anyone?) which makes it that much more memorable for everyone involved.

Below are a few fun ideas for themed weddings that we can really get behind (and we hope you do too!)

  1. Disney Princess

Who doesn’t want to be a princess for a day? Obviously more for the bride and bridesmaids of the wedding (although we can get grooms and groomsmen to be princes too), Disney is the epitome of the classical fairy tale, with beautiful sprawling gowns and flowing dresses. Whether you want to be the traditional Cinderella, someone a little more modern such as Tiana (Princess and the Frog) or someone a little unorthodox like Belle or Ariel (Beauty & The Beast, The Little Mermaid) fashioning your entire wedding after your chosen theme should be no problem, as Disney has a huge range of merchandise and themed accessories for Disney princesses alone.

  1. Game of Thrones

The recent popularity of the brutal TV show may have inspired some brides and grooms to be. Deck your attendees out in true fantasy gear with long trains, suits of armour and leather jerkins. You can also suit your buffet and food entertainment to the theme of the wedding, with different families assigned their own ‘House’ crests to specific tables. Just make sure not to make it too close to the show, as you don’t really want to re-enact ‘The Red Wedding’!

  1. Digital Wedding!

This one is a little strange, but often reserved for those who are big into their online gaming. There have been marriage ceremonies (as well as funerals – who knew?) performed on the globally famous World of Warcraft, where characters reflect their RL (real life) selves and get married ‘in game’. Of course the marriage isn’t actually official but it is a really sweet way of incorporating your love into the hobbies that you share.

Naturally weddings aren’t for everyone, but there is something exciting about getting married in general, planning the wedding, choosing your venue, even the lead up to the final day, those butterflies are an experience not to miss. However people are individuals and some prefer not to have a wedding, instead just living together as normal without proof of their dedication to one another. What matters is that you love and trust each other in the end.

At the end of the day a wedding is simply a visual and physical depiction of your love and commitment to the other person. They can be grandiose affairs or personal family events, it is up to you. The most important thing is that both of you enjoy your special day together, you don’t get too drunk, and you create beautiful memories on first day of your joined lives! Congratulations and good luck.

5 Sweet and Sexy Gifts For a Romantic Evening at Home

So you’ve finished all your paperwork, the dishes have been cleaned the car has been washed, the kids have been taken to a sleepover and it is just the two of you for the night; what next right? Obviously a romantic evening for two! When you become parents, it can be hard to get quality time together with your partner so rare moments like these should be treasured. In fact, why not make an entire evening of it? Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

  1. Scented Candles

Scented candles is a perfect way to set the mood and makes a great start to a romantic evening. Whether it is accompanied with a nice warm bath or one of your favourite blockbusters, you can’t go wrong with their warm ambience. Curl up in front of your fireplace and enjoy the sights and scents. Try to make sure that you don’t get a scent that is too overpowering, as it can tickle your nose and make sure that you both agree on the scent beforehand. If you are not quite as fond of the chosen scent as your partner is, it might put you off! Communication is key.

  1. Kinky Dice

Fancy something a little more adventurous? These kinky dice are a great way of getting both partners going. They can be as extreme or as mild as you like, in fact in some ways starting off slow is a great way to increase the tension as you nervously make your next roll. Throw in a few items of food, such as strawberries, ice cream or marshmallows, and you could start getting really risqué.

  1. Chocolate Body Paint

While a little bit on the messy side, this is a great way to have your cake and eat it, in bed! Chocolate body paint is specially designed to be both creative and delicious and can be used anywhere and everywhere (except maybe in the eyes) so go nuts! Just remember to put plastic sheeting down or at least a towel in order to try and minimise mess!

  1. Sexy Nurse/Hunky Policeman

While you might be having a heart attack or you’re in trouble with the feds, spice up your romantic evening with the help of a sexy outfit or two. Available for both the boys and the girls, in various stages of undress, act out your fantasies with the help of Nurse Joy and Officer Jeremy. Of course if sexy nurses and sexy policeman aren’t your thing, there are a whole host of different outfits to choose from, including a few slightly unorthodox ones thrown in there. It is all in the spirit of romance!

  1. Romantic Massage

After a long stressful day at work or sorting the kids out, sometimes your joints and muscles can feel like they’re on fire. You’re tired, you’re annoyed and you’re not really in the mood. But then you lie down, you listen to some calming music and your partner gives you an absolutely gorgeous massage that helps to work away at all your aches and pains. Perhaps throw some flickering candles into the mix and a warm beverage or a nice glass of your favourite liquor and you’re feeling a lot better now. Sounds great doesn’t it?

Obviously many of these are meant to be just a little bit of fun but if they help set the mood for your romantic evening in with your other half then they have certainly been a success. Just make sure you leave enough time to clean up afterwards as chocolate body paint can get quite messy and it’s a little embarrassing to be finding it in your hair the morning after as you travel to work!

The Meaning Behind The Gift – What Porcelain Symbolises in Gift Giving

When you are looking for ideas into a heartfelt gift for a milestone birthday, a new baby announcement or a well-earned achievement, it can be difficult to sift through all the potential gifts in order to make a solid decision. Jewellery or silverware? A simple card or thought out poem? A piece of artwork or a memory book? There are so many choices to pick from.

In some cases it is a good idea to choose a gift that is both beautiful and practical, a gift that will get some use in its new home and porcelain makes an ideal gift for just this reason. Whether you buy a porcelain figurine or some intricate porcelain crockery, the new gift will be treasured and treated with care. But what does giving porcelain actually symbolise?

Porcelain in China
Porcelain as we have come to know it first originated in China from the time of the Eastern Han Dynasty period – 206BC – 220AD. However the style of porcelain and its construction methods were not perfected until porcelain manufacturing was exported to the Islamic world during the Tang Dynasty in 618 – 907AD. Many areas of East Asia caught on quickly following this and soon the manufacture of porcelain was organised over many sites, with some sites able to fire as many as 25,00 wares during their activation.

By the 1500’s, Porcelain was in high demand across East Asia and even Europe, with some styles more highly sought after than others due to their make and manufacturer. Jingdezhen porcelain was considered to be the most famous, as it represented a source of imperial pride and was used as tribute offerings, making it highly sought after in the western world. Owning valuable porcelain became known as a sign of wealth and prosperity.

Porcelain in Europe
Chinese porcelain was rare and hard to come by as attempts to duplicate were not fully understood and many attempts failed, until the start of the 1700’s when the methods for manufacturing porcelain were finally revealed. Because of this, Chinese porcelains were held in very high esteem, causing the term ‘china’ to circulate as a term synonymous with porcelain.

Delicate and Intricate
While strong in its own right and highly resistant to heat, porcelain is a delicate material and that makes it precious. Porcelain gifts can be as intricate or as simple as you like in their design and you will often see beautiful porcelain pieces making great tea and china sets for lunch time cream tea.  More detailed porcelain figurines make fantastic gifts as they can represent a certain milestone or achievement in the recipient’s life, or one of their hobbies as there are a number of porcelain figurines dedicated to dancing and ballet, to use an example.

A Gift to Last
Porcelain has been around for hundreds of years, with countless artisans working to recreate many beautiful designs that will last for many more years to come. From detailed animal sculptures and tinted figurines to more simple, yet aesthetic porcelain cutlery and crockery, porcelain comes in a wide range of shapes, sizes and finishes. Whether you’re looking for a plain teacup with a swirled design around its rim, or a more detailed figurine of a ballerina on point, porcelain makes a fantastic gift, whatever the occasion and it is surely one that your recipient will treasure for years.

Is Your Insurance Knowledge Truly Healthy?

Whether you are a single man or woman or under the roof with a small or large-size family, making ends meet in today’s economy can be tricky at times.

For many people; getting by on a daily basis means making one sacrifice after another. In some instances, those sacrifices oftentimes relate to things that many other people take for granted (housing, food, utilities, insurance etc.).

In the event you find yourself struggling in 2015, there are options out there for you to explore.

Review Your Financial Health

First and foremost, it is important to sit down and review your financial portfolio from start to finish.

Look at where you are financially and see if you:

  • Have a rainy day fund;
  • Are putting money aside for retirement;
  • Have more money coming in than going out on a regular basis;
  • Are properly insured when it comes to health and life insurance;
  • Have taken time each year to review your finances (whether with a professional or on your own).

As you can see, there are numerous things one must think about when it comes to staying financially healthy.

More and more Americans have discovered since the inception of Obamacare that there are some new possibilities out there for them when it comes to securing the right health insurance plan.

Consumers can use an Obama care calculator to review their financial health and see what insurance plan best suits both your financial needs and health requirements. In a number of cases, consumers can find themselves eligible for a federal tax credit, allowing them to locate affordable health insurance.

If you work for someone, check with your employer’s HR department to determine if you/the company qualifies for affordable health insurance.

In the event you are self-employed, there is a good chance you can also secure the right health insurance coverage.

Either way, make sure you review all the options. For those who are qualified for Obamacare and choose not to buy it, they can be subjected to a hefty fine when it comes time in the spring to do their taxes.

Fit Health Insurance into Your Regimen

There are many things individuals can do to improve their financial situations, including:

  • Pay down credit card debts;
  • Live within their means and not buying items they can’t afford;
  • Practicing a safe and healthy lifestyle so as not to be regularly dealing with illness or injuries;
  • Finding and maintaining the right insurance coverage (health, life, auto, homeowners or renters’ etc.) so that they don’t encounter a financial nightmare.

If you find yourself needing a health insurance plan or upgrading your current coverage, review what is out there for you and/or your family.

Just like keeping your body and your finances running smoothly takes time and effort, so too does securing the right health insurance plan in 2015.

Knowledge is a great thing, but something which almost always must be refined.

When you review your health insurance needs, you and your wallet win.

How to Keep Kids Healthy on a Summer Vacation

How to Keep Kids Healthy on a Summer Vacation

Keeping a child healthy is not usually an easy goal to achieve. Kids are often resistant of the practices that keep them healthy and they often do not take as many preventative measures to avoid health concerns as their parents would like them too.

In the summertime, a lot of families like to take a little vacation to get away from their normal lives for a bit and see the world. This is often one of the most difficult times to keep kids from getting sick or injured. Here are some ways to keep kids healthy on a summer vacation.

Get a check-up with the family doctor first

Before making any travel plans, it is a good idea for the whole family to visit their normal healthcare practitioner to make sure everyone is healthy enough for travel. This is also a great time to use concierge medicine doctors in Washington DC to refill prescriptions and get any shots that might be needed for the trip.

Keep healthy snacks nearby

When on the road, it is easy for people to just grab the closest and easiest snack available, which is usually a not very healthy snack. Parents can prevent this by packing up some healthy options to give their kids when hunger strikes.

Try to maintain their normal sleeping schedule

When traveling, kids do not often get the luxury of sleeping as they normally would at home, either because they are on the road or in the air or there are too many fun activities distracting them. It is a good idea for parents to schedule their days to make sure everyone get the breaks they need for sleep.

Never leave the children alone

For parents with older kids, it is easy to trust them at home on their own from time to time. However, while in an unfamiliar and new place, families should stay together at all times.

Keep them hydrated

Another common issue for children while on summer vacation is dehydration. This is a problem that is easily prevented. Parents should make sure their kids are drinking enough water throughout the day, especially if they are spending a lot of time outside.

Do not forget the sunscreen

Sunscreen may not seem like the most essential item to pack. However, not only does a sunburn ruin a trip for a child, sun exposure can permanently damage a child’s skin. Remember to apply sunscreen every morning and reapply if a lot of sun exposure is on the agenda for that day.

Practice regular hand washing

Hand washing is one of the best defenses against illness that people can use anytime of the year. When kids are in public places with a lot of frequently touches surfaces, it is even more important that parents make sure they wash their hands a lot.

Carry a small emergency kit

In case on an emergency, it is a good idea for everyone to be prepared. Parents can carry a small kit that would include things like bandages and alcohol wipes.

How Families Can Learn What it Means to Live a Healthy Lifestyle

How Families Can Learn What it Means to Live a Healthy Lifestyle

There has been a lot of controversy and conflicting opinions buzzing around lately on what it means to be healthy. With all of this different information, it can seem impossible for parents to distinguish it all and decide what will truly be best for their family.

Even though there are a lot of different definitions of healthy, parents can find some ways to differentiate and strike the perfect balance for their family. Everyone in the family will be able to make a few small changes to improve their overall health and wellness. Here are some way families can learn what it means to live a healthy lifestyle.

Talk with a trusted healthcare professional

The best place to find information about anything health and wellness related is the doctor’s office. Everyone should learn how to find healthcare plans online to search for a doctor they can trust to give them the most recent and reliable information.

Know what is in everyone’s food

One of the biggest reasons why many families are gaining weight or suffering from other health issues is because they are reading the front of labels and not the back. Knowing what ingredients are actually in their food is a good step to take to truly know if it is healthy or not. Following a diet of mostly natural foods is the best way to do this.

Keep it simple

When it comes to eating healthy, simplicity is often best. Many families will search for packages items that make certain claims for their healthy, but it is usually best to just buy healthy fruits, vegetables and lean sources of protein.

Find some fun, healthy activities

Many common family activities are centered on sitting and eating unhealthy foods. It is a good idea to change that tradition by finding some healthier activities to partake in. For example, instead of going to the movie theater every week, families can instead check out a new hiking trail in their area.

Learn what cravings really mean

Cravings are something that everyone experiences from time to time, no matter their lifestyle. It is important for people to learn what those cravings mean in order to best serve and reduce them. For example, sometimes people crave unhealthy foods when they are stressed, so they would need to find a way to relieve stress.

Practice portion control

Another issue that families often have is knowing what portions are best for the things they are eating. It is easy to overindulge even on healthy foods when the portions are too large. Measuring out portions either by volume or weight is the best way to keep track of this. Labels on the back of foods can be helpful to help people know what an appropriate amount is as well.

Use support to stay on track

Finding out what is healthy might be simple at first, but staying on track with a healthy lifestyle is much more difficult. Every family will need their own support system to help them stay on track. Families can set goals together and keep each other accountable to reach those goals.
